Stephanie McManus, Michelle Ruby, Annemarie Bretz, and Beth Medlin from Poplin Elementary are ideal candidates and want to participate in this opportunity. They are seeking funding to secure a spot on this July 2012 trip.
As a part of the Union County Public Schools GIG Campaign (Globalization, Innovation, and Graduation), four members of the teaching community at Poplin Elementary would like to participate in a professional development opportunity. This opportunity is provided by World View at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. World View is offering a study visit to Costa Rica in July 2012. Funding is needed to participate in this 10-day trip. The estimated fees are $2,000 per teacher. The fees include round-trip air fare, most meals, ground transfers and transportation, home-stay accommodations, entrance fees to cultural, historical and ecological sites, “Spanish for Educators” language lessons, participation in community base projects, activities and collaborations with local schools and colleges.
This global learning opportunity would help Poplin staff design and develop lessons that counteract stereotypes and incorporate histories and contributions of all cultures. By participating in this opportunity Poplin’s teachers would broaden their appreciation of diverse cultures. The participants plan to demonstrate their knowledge of the history of diverse cultures and their role in shaping global issues.
The teachers seeking to attend this World View Costa Rica study visit want to be global leaders.
“The goal of the Study Visit is to help educators become leaders for global education by looking beyond the borders of North Carolina and experiencing a culture, country, and people different from their own. Educators will learn about Costa Rica’s education system, the Spanish language, development and environmental issues. We also will explore significant cultural and historical sites and interact with Costa Rican families. This Study Visit is intended to be a unique and challenging professional development opportunity—not a tourist trip!”
“The ideal candidate is an educator who is committed to global education and to increasing the opportunities for adding global content and activity to their school or college. World View considers international travel to be an essential aspect of being well-educated in the 21st century and seeks candidates who have not yet had an opportunity to travel abroad.”

Union County Public School students would benefit from educators participating in this type of globalization opportunity by bringing the world into the classroom. These teachers are required to create a global action plan that will promote global awareness and it’s relevance to all faculty members, influencing curriculum and teaching practices throughout the school.
